INVESTIGATIONS are still ongoing to identify the cause of a "rotten egg" smell in Johnstown.

Several complaints have been made regarding an odour in the Wrexham village over the past few weeks.

The smell, which has been described as "atrocious" has been ongoing since October 16, with dozens of residents raising concerns.

Councillor David A Bithell has been inundated with complaints from residents and is awaiting further information.

Last week, Natural Resources Wales said they had identified a "potential cause" of the issue, but the smell still remains.

It is believed the odour is coming from Hafod landfill site, an area run by firm Enovert.

Cllr Bithell told the Leader he was informed by the waste management business, that they had recently completed a number of works at the site in Johnstown.

Enovert also confirmed there had been a "significant increase" in complaints since October 16, but believed they were not all down to the landfill site.

The firm said: "We continue to work together with Natural Resource Wales in investigation of all complaints and ensure that the site is operated in compliance with the permit. However, Enovert do not believe that all complaints reported have been attributable to the site."

James McClymont, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Team Leader Industry & Waste Regulation in North East Wales, said: “NRW officers have detected localised and transient odours related to Hafod landfill site.

“This follows investigations where officers have visited the site and completed a number of offsite odour assessments at different times during the day. Our officers remain in regular contact with the site operator, Enovert North.

“We are doing our utmost to fully determine the cause of the recent complaints and we will continue to regulate the site to ensure it is operating in line with the environmental permit.”

Local Member of the Senedd, Ken Skates has called for "clarity" on the issue.

Clwyd South MS Ken Skates said: "I have been contacted by a number of constituents in Johnstown about this issue and have discussed it with Cllr David Bithell. I have raised the matter with Natural Resources Wales' head of North East Wales operations and await her response.

"The community needs clarity on the source of the smell and assurances that action will be taken to both address it and ensure it doesn't recur. Residents also need an assurance that the site operator is complying with its permit conditions."
