"SOMETHING must be done" about parking outside a school in Wrexham before a child is knocked over says a concerned resident. 

Worries over the safety of children are growing in Johnstown with concerns over parking outside Ysgol Yr Hafod during busy times, continuing to be raised. 

There have been calls for an increased police presence during drop-off and pick-up times to monitor the parking of parents. 

John Whitefoot, a resident in Johnstown believes extra measures need to be taken to ensure the safety of all involved. 

He said: "Parents parking for convenience sadly puts a lot of people at risk daily 8am to 9.15am and 2.30pm to 4.15pm.

"They park continuously on road markings that mean the opposite. White chevron markings directly opposite the school entrance and yellow lines are ignored.

"When they park on chevrons, it blocks clear visibility to motorists of the crossing, children are then forced to walk in between the cars and around the road.

"Something must be done before a child is crushed, run over or knocked into."

Councillor David A Bithell, who is also chair of governors at the school stated that extra provisions have been put in place, and any concerns will be addressed. 

He added: "I am aware we have received a complaint of cars parking on the chevrons outside Bangor Road.

"As part of the planning conditions we installed 8 new spaces/lay-bys in Bangor Road which has greatly assisted both residents and parents.

"I would also encourage parents to park appropriately and where possible support active travel by walking to school to alleviate any parking issues.

"We are always looking to improve any issues raised and the school proactively work with the local community to address any concerns."

North Wales Police say they are aware of concerns over parking and have completed patrols outside the school this week.

Sergeant Nathan Harvey said: “We are aware of the concerns raised and we are working alongside the local council and the school regarding this. “There will be an increase in police patrols during certain times.

“I ask that members of the public are considerate with their parking when in the area.”
