TRANSPORT for Wales has apologised to customers after its service from Wrexham to Cardiff for the Wales game was labelled "horrendous".

Football fans from North Wales were left frustrated once again as the rail service down to the capital was lacking carriages.

Andrew Cumming, from Wrexham, was taking his son down to Cardiff to watch the Wales vs Croatia game on Sunday night and labelled the service 'horrendous'.

It is not the first time fans from the North have had concerns over the train services put on after international games.

The frustrations over the busy service was only heightened after an extra train was put on for fans to return South after the Gibraltar game in Wrexham on Wednesday.

Andrew Cumming said: "Worryingly, the train down was over half an hour late, and depressingly there were only two carriages and standing room only, but we were fortunately changing at Shrewsbury.

"The Shrewsbury to Cardiff train was also only two carriages and was even fuller, with passengers standing all down the aisles. It was horrendous.

"So after around four hours of standing, we arrived in Cardiff – only to be told to wait on the train as two carriages were to be added for the now empty train’s short trip to Swansea. Why weren’t they added at Shrewsbury?

"The next day, we were returning at 11.25am, and yes, two carriages again for the long trip back.

"The way that North Walians are treated by Transport for Wales is despicable. On Wednesday night, for the Wales v Gibraltar game, a special train was added to the service to return South Walians home – there was no such service for North Walians on Sunday night.

"I would have driven to the game, but at the new 20mph speed limit from the Welsh Government, it would have taken me about three days to get down there."

Transport for Wales apologised to fans for the busy services on Sunday, which was down to 'mechanical faults' between Crewe and Chester.

A Transport for Wales spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, due to mechanical faults on two trains and signalling issues between Crewe and Chester, some of our long-distance trains were very busy on Sunday.

“We had a robust pre-event plan to support the Wales v Croatia game and strengthened services where possible, but we apologise to those affected by our busy trains.

“TfW is now running 20% more services than we were in 2018 and we’re investing more than £800m in brand new trains for the Wales and Borders network with a new train arriving every 10-12 days. As we continue to add more trains, we’ll improve reliability and resilience across the network

“We’ll be working closely with FAW ahead of the forthcoming November fixture.”
