A drink-driver who trapped himself in his car when he crashed into a tree has been banned.

Nathan Evans, of Yale Park in Wrexham, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court on Monday.

The 31-year-old admitted that on June 21 at Rhos, he drove a Vauxhall motor vehicle on an unclassified road in Bronwylfa after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in his blood exceeded the specified limit.

Prosecutor Justin Espie told the court that Evans was driving at around 6.15am when he struck a tree.

The collision caused the vehicle to rebound into the carriageway and left him initially trapped inside.

He was later taken to hospital, where a blood alcohol reading was undertaken.

Evans was found to have 125 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood - the limit being 80.

Victoria Handley, defending, told the court her client had been out drinking with a friend the night before and had slept on the friend's couch overnight after not being able to catch a taxi.

She explained: "This is a hard working lad who has been trying to do overtime to hit targets at work.

"He normally starts at eight, but this day he started at six - so he walked to the pub to collect his car and says he felt fine. But obviously that wasn't the case.

"He accepts full responsibility for his actions.

The Leader:

"Fortunately it was only him involved in the collision with the tree, and he will be able to keep his job."

The Magistrates fined Evans £323 and ordered him to pay a £129 victim surcharge, as well as £85 costs.

He received a 12 month driving ban.
