WREXHAM schools have started a new initiative after rising concerns from parents regarding inconsiderate parking.

Ysgol Min Y Ddol and Ysgol Cefn Mawr are two schools that have introduced a friendly 'Parking Buddies' initiative.

It comes following concerns from parents and residents regarding inconsiderate parking surrounding the schools.

Time can be tight when it comes to the school drop off and pick up during the week, but schools are trying to encourage more people to utilise parking areas away from the immediate school entrance and to encourage walking where possible.

Claire Rayner, headteacher at Ysgol Min Y Ddol, said: "The two community schools; Ysgol Min y Ddol and Ysgol Cefn Mawr raised concerns in our sub community council meeting regarding inconsiderate and dangerous parking by our parents, during drop off and pick up times.

"The sub committee discussed what we could do and PC Lara Shires, North Wales Police, suggested parking buddies which are child-shaped signs displaying key messages.

"They have proved successful deterrents in other schools. It was agreed that we would proceed with the idea and personalise them with both our school uniforms and language of our schools to make it harder for the parents to ignore!

"The sub committee and schools all contributed towards the cause in the hope it improves the road safety outside our schools. We are very lucky to have such a close and supportive community council in Cefn Mawr."

PACT North Wales and the Cefn Community Council have kindly provided funding, along with Ysgol Min Y Ddol and Ysgol Cefn Mawr.

Andrea Green, headteacher at Ysgol Cefn Mawr, said: "We are pleased to be working with PCSO Lara Shiers and Cefn Community Council on the Parking Buddy initiative on Plas Kynaston Lane to remind car users to park safely.

"We are continuing to work with our community partners on alleviating parking issues in the local community to keep our pupils safe on their journey to and from school.

"We are delighted with the Parking Buddies which have  already had an impact on this morning's school run."

The overall priority from the initiative is to promote safe and considerate parking, and most importantly, to ensure the safety of all children.
