A young prisoner made a range of weapons in order to protect himself from those he owed money to, a court heard.

Harry Gray appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court via video link on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old admitted five offences of possessing an offensive weapon within HMP Berwyn, all of which happened on June 2.

Prosecutor Rhian Jackson told the court Gray had been a serving prisoner at the Wrexham jail at the time.

The items - two of which were described as a 'rock in a sock' and the other three as sharpened pieces of metal with improvised cloth handles - were discovered in different locations around his cell when it was searched.

He accepted he was in control of them, the court heard.

Gray had been handed a 45 month sentence at Caernarfon Crown Court last year for drugs supply.

Gary Harvey, defending, told the court: "In brief mitigation, he owed people money in the prison.

"To defend himself, he makes these weapons.

"It's as simple as that - and he admits he had them in his possession."

The court committed Gray to the Crown Court, with his sentence date set as September 21.
