Rachael Drew, prosecuting, told the court that at around 9am, he was seen placing chicken in a basket at the store and when approached by a shop worker he ignored them, then left the premises without paying.

The value of the chicken taken came to £50 and when he was interviewed, he admitted the theft.

Defending himself, Kilshaw told the court: "I know there's no justification, but I have a lot of mental health issues.

The Leader:

"I have a list of medication as long as my arm and on certain days I've not had my medication.

"I can't blame it on anything else; some days I am not even aware of where or who I am."

Deputy District Judge Paul Conlon told the defendant his actions had been deliberate and had caused the store loss.

He ordered Kilshaw to pay an £80 fine, £32 victim surcharge, £85 costs and £50 compensation.
