A MAN who terrified residents by standing in the street with a hammer and an axe has been spared jail.

Tsvetomir Parashkevov, of Ruabon Road in Wrexham, appeared at Mold Crown Court for sentence on Thursday.

The 45-year-old had admitted at a previous hearing that on July 10 he had in his possession within a public place an offensive weapon, namely a hammer, and a bladed article; namely an axe, at Street Record in Wrexham.

Amy Edwards, prosecuting, told the court that on the day of the offence, North Wales Police received a call from a resident saying there was an unknown man standing at the end of her drive holding a hammer and an axe.

Officers attended the scene and found Parashkevov still there, with the items having been placed at the kerbside.

Asked what he was doing, he told the police he was "waiting for a friend who owed him money."

He claimed he'd been thrown out of his home because of the 'friend," but was calm throughout the interaction.

Judge Rhys Rowlands clarified to the court that the 'axe' was small in size, akin to one used for chopping firewood.

Parashkevov, defending himself, was asked if he wished to say anything.

He'd made it clear to the court he didn't want to have legal representation, despite the Judge confirming he understood the offences were serious and could result in custody.

"I'm just waiting for the court's decision, Your Honour," he told the Judge - but when prompted, confirmed he is in full time employment at a Wrexham chicken factory.

Judge Rowlands told the defendant: "Up until the present offences, you were a man of good character who has not been in trouble with the police before and obviously has no convictions; that's important.

"Your good character has been lost as a result of what you did that morning.

"It must have been very frightening, outside [the] house with this small axe and hammer."

The Judge added it was also an important feature that his behaviour had been out of character.

As such, a sentence of 20 weeks was imposed - but it was suspended for 18 months.

Parashkevov must pay a £250 fine and £120 costs, as well as a £154 victim surcharge.

"You can't have the hammer or small ace back I'm afraid," The Judge added, imposing a forfeiture and destruction order.
