A popular Northop woman is celebrating her milestone 100th birthday today.

Peggy Pierce was born in Northop Hall on August 17, 1923, and today (Thursday) will be marking the big day.

Mrs Pierce was born to Annie and Peter Roberts, who was a school attendance officer in Deeside. She also had brothers Barrie and Gilbert Roberts.

When she was 14, she went to be a nanny in the Lake District, and then at 19 she came home to work in Shotton Steelworks for the War effort.

During this time, she met her husband, Noel Pierce from Northop.

They later married in Northop Church in 1945 and spent their married life in the area, where they had their only child, Susan.

Mrs Pierce had worked on the schoolyard in Northop where her daughter says the pupils were very fond of her, with many still asking about her now.

Other news:

Her daughter said that she was later warden of the “pensioners bungalows” in Northop, with herself and husband Noel retiring into one. As warden, she did her best for everyone. Sadly, Noel died 16 years ago.

Susan said that while Mrs Pierce lived in the area, she was very much a village person and much loved by villagers, joining in everything. Her great love was the church, and she was a member of the British Legion.

After a fall last year she moved to Oak Alyn Hall Care Home, Cefn-y-bedd where her family says she has been very happy. Her daughter added that the staff are very kind to her.

Along with daughter Susan, who is married to Frank Friend, Mrs Pierce has two granddaughters Anna and Laura. Anna is married to Alun Kime.

Mrs Pierce also has two great-grandchildren, Osian and Llinos aged four and five who visit her regularly in the home.
