A DEDICATED charity champion from Connah's Quay is preparing for his annual rowing challenge in aid of a good cause.

The Leader has reported many times over the years on the ongoing efforts by Ray Woolley to support Cancer Research UK.

And at 12.30pm on Sunday, August 20, he is to set off on his yearly row from Connah's Quay Docks to Chester.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Cancer Research UK on behalf of Deeside Voluntary Committee.

Mr Woolley told the Leader: "I've been doing this for 48 years now, and I started after my bother Reg died young of cancer.

"I swore then that if I could ever do anything to help, I would."

He added this year's challenge is particularly poignant, as he lost his other brother Paul six months ago and his friend Cliff in recent months - both to cancer.

He explained: "It's getting harder each year, but as long as I can keep doing it, I will.

"I've not missed one in 48 years and I don't care what the weather's doing - it'll be done."

Mr Woolley also encouraged others to join the voluntary committee and help to raise money for good causes.
