A Flintshire dog rescue is raising awareness of the ‘crisis’ as dog homes overflow and rescues are struggling to keep up with demand.
Almost Home Dog Rescue is one of many battling the growing demand, and trying to save as many lives as possible.
Based in Nercwys, the rescue has rehomed over 1,100 dogs, most coming from the pound, and constantly raising funds and finding foster homes for those waiting for their forever homes.
They have drawn up some “Did you know?” points to raise awareness to this crisis, and how hard they work to battle it. Here is what they said:
Did you know? - In some counties of England and Wales, stray dogs have just seven days to be claimed by their lawful owner? If they are not claimed within seven days, they are at risk of being put to sleep. Sometimes, Rescues manage to find a space to save these dogs but, not all of them.
Sadly, a lot of perfectly healthy dogs don’t find rescue spaces and are put to sleep. This has accelerated hugely since Covid-19 and the mass-breeding of dogs. With the cost of living crisis and the throw-away society in which we live, we now have the perfect storm for Animal Rescues, who are drowning under the strain of the situation, and more and more dogs are dying on a daily basis.
Did you know? - Every dog over 8 weeks old should be microchipped and registered to their legal owner by law? You must keep the details updated to ensure that you can be reunited with your pet if it is caught straying.
Did you know? - Since Covid-19, Rescues have been under a huge amount of pressure, with a lot less funding? They are seeing more and more dogs coming in, needing more medical work and have much less support due to the cost of living crisis.
Did you know? - Every single day, dogs die within the UK, due to the lack of available space in Rescue Centres? These dogs are a wide range of breeds, age, needs, characters - all just needing loving homes! Candie, for example, is an 8 year old, female cross-breed who has been bred from to within an inch of her life, for her entire life, before ending up in the pound where she went unclaimed. Almost Home Dog Rescue are currently trying hard to find this lovely girl the forever home she deserves.

Did you know? - Rescue dogs aren't 'damaged', as so many people believe them to be? Don't automatically go to a breeder, ask yourself WHY you want a dog? It's for companionship and care, for both you and the dog, so speak to a Rescue first. You might be pleasantly surprised!
Did you know? - You could help a Rescue today? Share social media posts (to raise awareness), donate, volunteer, foster, adopt! There are so many ways to help!
Did you know? - Almost Home Dog Rescue are also heavily involved in the government campaign to end Greyhound racing in Wales, and be the first UK country to do so? Greyhound racing is only legal in 10 countries in the world, and the UK is 4 of those 10.
Almost Home Dog Rescue have rescued and re-homed almost 300 greyhounds in 7 years, and had to say no to thousands more, as the unscrupulous industry is allowed to continue this barbaric ‘sport’. Why not consider a lazy, gentle greyhound as a pet? You won’t regret it!
Did you know? - Almost Home Dog Rescue have an amazing Charity Shop on Buckley High Street? Known for being more like a boutique, than a Charity Shop. Shopping here is another way you can help the dogs, whilst saving some money!
Did you know? - You can help by sponsoring one of their 16 forever-fosters? These are dogs who couldn’t be adopted, due to their ongoing medical costs which the rescue covers for life!
