AN INTERACTIVE map shows the difference in the number of roads earmarked for exemption to the new 20mph in south Wales compared to Wrexham and Flintshire.

The map, put together by the Welsh Government, shows which roads have been proposed to remain 30mph when the national 20mph limit comes into effect on September 17.

The map shows that dozens of roads have been earmarked by local authorities in south Wales for exemption, whilst just 15 in Flintshire and 10 in Wrexham have been suggested so far

It is up to Welsh local authorities to decide which roads it puts forward to the Welsh Government to be exempt from the new limit.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Wrexham Council's leader member for environment, said: “When looking at the map of the whole of Wales, it’s important to bear in mind that each county’s exemptions depend on their own situation.

"Wrexham is very residential with A roads that are backed with properties over the 20 properties per kilometre, which determines the drop in speed.

"After the implementation on September 17, we will look at routes that potentially should not have been dropped, and consider the implications.”

Flintshire Council's chief Officer for Streetscene and Transportation, Katie Wilby said: “Flintshire County Council has commenced the process of reviewing its restricted roads in accordance with Welsh Government’s place and exceptions criteria.

"Following an assessment of local roads using Welsh Government’s ‘exception’ criteria, and working closely with County Councillors, a number of roads in Flintshire have been identified as possible exceptions which have been available for viewing.

"Any restricted roads that meet the exceptions criteria are being formally advertised in accordance with the statutory consultation process. After the introduction of the 20mph national legislative change in September, local communities will be able to put forward further roads for consideration for an exemption via the Council’s website."
