A FLINTSHIRE pub landlord held a fun community day to raise funds for a cancer care unit.

Malcolm Devereux, at The Blue Anchor in Buckley, held the fundraiser in aid of the Shooting Star Cancer Support charity, which helps the Wrexham Maelor Hospital unit.

Last month's event raised an incredible £1,620, and Malcolm is full of praise for the support received.

He said: "The kind donations we received from the Buckley community was absolutely overwhelming.

"We had a disco all day hosted by Richie Peters, who also donated his fee to the charity. Richie also hosted the raffle and auction and did a fantastic job keeping people happy and entertained all day.

"We did a BBQ with Paul Hunt, one of our regulars, cooking for us. All meat was provided by Bistre Farm Shop and all other accompaniments, buns sauce etc, were provided by Cliff Wynne-Jones of the Pizza Guys Buckley and the Round Table.

"We chose Shooting Star as we recently lost a few customers to cancer, and so many have used or are still supported by the unit. I wanted to let people know we are here for them too, if they need a chat.

"At the end of the day itself, I hadn't expected to do as well as we had. I was that overwhelmed I actually broke down but it's made me happy.

"I'd like to thank the amazing team of bar staff, Elaine, Becky, Tracey, Sarah and Derek, plus my business partner Marjorie McEvoy, who along with myself, all helped on the day and help collect donations."
