THE PRICE of garden waste collections in Wrexham has risen by 40 per cent.

Wrexham Council has revealed that the charge for waste collection from September 2023 to August 2024 has risen from £25 to £35.

Cllr Hugh Jones, the council's lead member for environment, said: “It was a very difficult decision to make, but we’re increasing the garden waste collection charge to £35 per green bin for the upcoming service year.

"We had hoped to freeze the price of the service for a further year, but unfortunately this won’t be possible. The increase is necessary to allow us to continue to deliver this service and to protect our key front line services as well.

"We’re committed to keeping the charge as low as possible and the £35 cost keeps us as one of the lowest when compared to other local authorities in England and Wales.”

Renewals for the next service year are now open, so you can visit wrexham.gov.uk/gardenwaste to make your payment online.

MORE NEWS:

Any residents who would like a bit of support to make an online payment can visit Contact Wrexham based in Wrexham Library, or you can drop into your local housing estate office.

You must have an email address to subscribe online. If you don’t have one you can call Streetscene on 01978 298989 to make a card payment.

Everyone who signs up will receive a sticker pack with a new, light red coloured sticker, which should be displayed on your bin lid from September.

The council is asking residents to NOT put their new sticker on their bin lid until the new service starts in September. Please continue to display your 2022/23 sticker until September 1 and (if possible) remove it before you apply your new sticker.

In previous years, the council says it has had a number of customers who attempted to pay for the service by sending cash and cheques to them. It is reiterating that it is unable to accept these payments.

Any unwanted garden waste bins can be removed on request. Once requested it may take a number of weeks for the bin to be collected. In the meantime, make sure your bin remains empty, accessible, but not left out causing an obstruction.

It may be worth keeping hold of your old garden waste bin for now because, if your garden waste bin has been removed and you change your mind in future, there is a charge for a new one.

You can take your garden waste to one of the household waste recycling centres (free of charge). Alternatively, you could compost garden waste at home. Take a look at Wales Recycles’ ‘how to set up home composting’ guide which has some useful information.
