A FLINTSHIRE man has successfully completed a world-record attempt in a gruelling challenge he describes as the 'toughest three months of his life'.

Sean Conway completed 102 iron distance triathlons consecutively across 102 days. That’s a 2.5-mile swim, a 112-mile cycle and a 26.2 mile run (marathon) every day for 102 days, to set a new world record.

Sean, 42, swam, biked, and ran for 14 hours a day, for more than double the distance between London and Cape Town, and has clocked an incredible 14,351.4 miles.

Starting each day at 5am in Mold leisure centre, Sean has endured torrential rain, blazing sun and battled through chest infections and various muscle strain injuries.

Finishing each day around 7pm, Sean left just enough time to re-fuel, see his physio, spend time with his family and importantly, sleep, even if just for a few hours.

Sean, who lives in the foothills of the Clwydian Range with his wife Caroline and two young children, said: “It’s been by far the toughest three months of my life.

"I wouldn’t wish what I’ve been through on my worst enemy but I’m so proud of what the team and I have achieved.

“Thinking back, my lowest moment was early on in the challenge. On day two I almost missed the 17-hour cut-off by a matter of minutes and the realisation that I might have bitten off more than I can chew.

“The best bit by far has been the community of swimmers, cyclists and runners who selflessly came out day after day no matter the weather to support me. You know who you are, I’ll be forever grateful.

“I hope to inspire a new generation of ultra-endurance athletes. I couldn’t have done it without my dedicated support crew and the incredible backing of the community that followed the challenge on the road and online. You kept me going and I can’t thank you enough.”

He first began the challenge on Monday, April 10 and since then, a growing army of supporters kept up to date on Sean’s progress with daily content shared on his Instagram channel, with many more opting to show their support by joining Sean on the swim, the bike and/or the run each day.

To fuel the incredible feat, Sean consumed between 6,000 and 8,000 calories each day in pots of double cream, Welsh cakes, biltong, bananas, cheese, lots of pasta meals, vegetables Optimum Nutrition Mass Gainer and protein, and each night his wife made a fresh healthy meal, his favourite being steak.

To date, Sean’s record attempt has raised £70,000 for Sean’s chosen charity partner, True Venture; a charity that aims to help kids TRY sport, LOVE sport and STAY in sport.

As donations continue to come in, Ryan Morrison, Founding Partner, True Foundation said: “We are so proud to have Sean as our Ambassador. He is such an inspiration for young people and is a brilliant role model showing them anything is possible.

"Thank you to everyone who has donated. Just incredible. The Foundation is working with Community Foundation Wales and together we will open up the Iron 102 fund and invite junior sports clubs to apply for grants from £200 to £2,000.

"The grants will fund equipment, facilities, event funding, subsidising travel and courses. Sean may have the world record, but you can still help to make this happen, so if you can, donate. Thank you.”
