THE PRE-SEASON opener in the USA is believed to have provided the second-highest attendance ever recorded for a match involving Wrexham AFC.

The Reds fell to a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Premier League giants Chelsea as they kicked off their overseas tour.

However, what was most impressive was the reception shown for Wrexham before, during and after the match.

New found fans of the club have been established over in the states thanks to the takeover by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and of course the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.

And that level of frenzy was clear to see as the Reds landed in the USA, with fans coming from all over to meet their heroes.

The match between Wrexham and Chelsea was played at the Kenan Memorial Stadium at Chapel Hill, North Carolina - and provided a sell-out crowd.

The game was played in front of a crowd of 50,596 people, making it the second-highest attendance that a match involving Wrexham has ever had.

And it wasn't far off the record either - which stands at an attendance of 54,096.

That was when Liverpool welcomed Wrexham to Anfield for an FA Cup fourth round match on January 24, 1970. The home side won 3-1.

The pre-season match attendance v Chelsea rose above the tie between Manchester United and Wrexham in September 1969 on the record list.

That fixture drew in a crowd of 48,347 people to Old Trafford for a League Cup match, which United won 2-0.

As for home matches, attendances at the Racecourse are currently some of the best they have ever been - with sell-outs now a regular occurrence in north Wales.

The record attendance at that ground was reportedly set in 1957, when the club hosted a match against Manchester United in front of 34,445 spectators.

The worldwide Reds are currently creating a bit of history everywhere they go. So, could we still be set to see the record attendance broken before they return to the English Football League next month?
