A new blood test unit in Wrexham has reduced waiting times from six weeks to three days.
The new Phlebotomy Unit called Ty Madoc has opened at Wrexham Maelor Hospital with six new chairs for patients to have their bloods taken, and also offers evening appointments.
Due to the pandemic, blood test waiting times increased to an average of six weeks as fewer locations offered blood test appointments.
Ty Madoc has opened to help meet the demand and growing needs of patients in the area, and since it opened 15,000 blood tests are done every month in Wrexham alone, helping reduce the waiting times for patients.
Deborah Brockley, Phlebotomy Services Manager at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, said: “We’re delighted as a service to be able to enhance the facilities that we can offer and to give our patients more options to have a blood test appointment for when it’s convenient for them.

“The new unit has been received well by patients and staff alike, and by saving people waiting weeks and weeks for a blood test it’s had a big positive impact on patient care and experience.”
The new unit is based near the Red Cross Cabin, at Entrance B of Wrexham Maelor Hospital, on Croesnewydd Road. The Grove Road Phlebotomy Clinic, in Wrexham, is now closed.
The hospital also plans to open three extra phlebotomy chairs later this year in the new Plas Gororau building, across from Wrexham Maelor Hospital, to further support the service and ensure patients are seen as soon as possible.
