FLINTSHIRE Council is warning people not to tamper with new 20mph signs after recent instances of it happening.
Photographs have emerged of 20mph signs directly parallel to 30mph signs when entering new speed limit zones - one such recent instance was Ruthin Road into Mold before it was corrected.
Flintshire Council has now explained the reasoning for erroneous signage.
In mid-September, most 30mph roads in Wales will be reduced to 20mph. The controversial scheme has seen petitions in opposition gather tens of thousands of signatures.
Flintshire Council recently provided information on how exemptions to the 20mph limit are decided.
A council spokesperson said: "In July 2022, Welsh Government introduced legislation to reduce speed limits on most restricted roads across the whole of Wales from 30mph to 20mph. This change will come into force on Sunday, September 17, 2023.
"Flintshire County Council is currently replacing 30mph signs with identical signs that have a peel-off layer to reveal ‘20’ so that the new speed limits can be introduced as soon as possible after midnight on 17 September."

They continued: "As can be imagined, there are hundreds of signs across the county and this is not a task that could be achieved overnight on the 17th. To make sure we are ready we have no choice but to start this work now."
"We are aware that some signs have been tampered with and the temporary stickers removed.
"The public are reminded that altering traffic signs is an offence under the Highways Act 1980 and any evidence of such interference will be forwarded to the police."
