POLICE have issued a warning about 'online scams' following concerns in the Wrexham area.

Sadly, there are a number of ways in which people can be taken advantage of online these days.

North Wales Police have urged caution following a case in the Wrexham area this week.

Inspector Luke Hughes raised the issue in his latest daily crime update on Wednesday, June 28.

He said the incident involved a 'romance scam' in which a woman transferred money to a person she met online.

He also warned of another tactic in which scammers target people and threaten to send intimate images of them to loved ones, unless money is sent to them.

Inspector Hughes said: "Concerns for a female who has transferred a sum of money to a person she met online – commonly known as a romance scam, where someone is led to believe they will receive a benefit after they have sent a sum of money.

"Sadly this is very rarely the case. Support and welfare will be addressed. There are some cruel individuals out there, but it is worthy of note that many of the calls originate outside the UK. Of course, this makes it a challenge to recover any money sent.

"Whilst I’m on about online scams – the biggest “scam” at present relates to attempts to entice money from people (male & female) who have sent “private” images to someone they have met online.

"That person then says they will send those images to the victim's family and friends. Experience shows that very rarely happens, but no doubt the thought itself is terrifying. My advice would be not to send pictures of your bits and pieces to people you have never met."
