A DOCUMENTARY all about Wrexham - which captured the hearts of people worldwide - has won a top prize at a glamorous event in America.

The Welcome to Wrexham series aired on Disney Plus last year and proved to be a huge hit.

It focused mainly on the takeover of the club by friends and actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

However, the series also shone a spotlight on some of the Wrexham community's most notable characters - from the much-loved Turf landlord Wayne Jones to outspoken painter Shaun Winter.

Now, Welcome to Wrexham has been given further recognition as it won the 'Best Sports Show' prize at the Critics Choice Real TV Awards last week.

The awards recognise excellence in nonfiction, unscripted and reality programming across broadcast, cable and streaming platforms.

Bravo and Netflix topped all other networks and platforms with four trophies each at the awards held on Friday, June 16.

Welcome to Wrexham, produced by FX, came out on top against 30 for 30 (ESPN), American Ninja Warrior (NBC), Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers (Hulu), Like a Girl (Fuse Media) and Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel (HBO Max).

A second season of the hugely-successful series is due to be released later this year.

That will document a memorable year for Wrexham AFC, who ended 15 years of hurt back in April by returning to the English Football League.

It is also expected to feature the likes of the epic May Bank Holiday gigs involving Kings of Leon, Declan Swans and Far From Saints at the Racecourse ground.
