Meet the quartet of dogs, young and old, who are looking for their forever homes thanks to a Flintshire dog rescue.

Almost Home Dog Rescue in Nercwys, has helped over 1,000 dogs get their forever homes since 2016.

Here are the four currently on the look-out for a perfect family to come along:

Poppy

The Leader: Poppy Poppy (Image: Almost Home Dog Rescue)

This scruffy Jack Russell is 11-years-old and came to the rescue after sadly one of her owners passed away and the other was too poorly to care for her, which resulted in her and another dog being left alone for around six months in a property with somebody 'popping in'.

They had also previously been left for sections of time whilst the owner was in hospital.

At the rescue, it became apparent that both dogs didn't get along and needed to be separated to both have a full and happy life, as they were arguing over items such as food, space and toys.

The rescue has described Poppy as ‘quiet’ but likes to spend time with people in her own time, feeling safe in her crate but sociable once she’s used to people.

She is fine with dogs when out, and walks well on a lead, but would need a home where she is the only dog. She is house trained and is starting to play with toys.

The rescue said: “When she arrived, she was underweight, dirty, had overgrown nails and was generally in need of some TLC. She, thankfully, adores her food and loves being groomed and so is looking much better now. This girl deserves a quiet life with somebody who will adore her and spoil her. She's desperate to bond with someone.“

Rico

He is also a Jack Russell who is 12-years-old and came from the same home as Poppy.

When he arrived at the rescue, he was infested with fleas and had a flea allergy, his nails were long and had not seen the real world for some time.

The rescue described him as “shy” and a “sweetheart” who enjoys his bed and sunbathing.

He does enjoy little walks and ignored other dogs but is ok around them, so the rescue suggest that he could live with a calm dog, or on his own. He is also starting to play with toys again.

The rescue said: “Rico travels well in the car and is house and crate trained too. He was a star at the vets and has already been neutered and microchipped. We have flea-treated and wormed him and also given him some medicated baths to help clear up his skin. He enjoys a little groom and his diet is a lot better now too, which will improve his coat and skin further.

“Overall, Rico is looking for a retirement home. A calm and relaxed atmosphere and somebody who will spend time with him, somewhere he can enjoy the garden and sunbathe.”

Stevie

The Leader: Stevie Stevie (Image: Almost Home Dog Rescue)

Stevie is a terrier mix who is around one-years-old. He was an unclaimed stray but since being at the rescue, has been a “complete star”.

He is “brilliant with people” and good with being handled, enjoying a fuss. He has enjoyed his walks and isn't bothered by traffic or passing people or dogs.

He is learning how to walk on one side as, at the moment, everything is so exciting for him according to the rescue.

They said: “So far, he's been good around other dogs and is happy to walk with or without another dog. He says hello politely and then moves on.  He's not had any off-lead training yet but will once he's settled and is neutered.

“Stevie could perhaps live with dog-savvy children. He travels well in the car and happily watches at the window. He needs an active home, where he will have loads of adventures. He is incredibly clever and has a bright future, in the right hands. “

Skye

The Leader: Skye Skye (Image: Almost Home Dog Rescue)

Skye is a four-year-old Collie who is shy but very sweet. She came to the rescue due to her owner’s declining health.

Skye went straight into a foster home and was “unsure” but now “really enjoying it”.

She likes walks and ‘fetch’ and enjoys going in the car but won’t jump in.

She is spotless in the house, according to the rescue, and crate trained for travelling, and in the house, but is equally happy not using them.

She does fear loud noises and busy areas so prefers walking in the countryside than on roads and does need more work on her recall training.

The rescue said: “We feel that Skye would be better in an adult-only home however she could cope with older, dog-savvy children visiting. She's never shown any aggression, just fear.

“Skye is good with other dogs, when out and about, but we believe she would be better living as the only dog in the household.

“Skye needs an empathic and patient home where she can be loved and exercised, with someone willing to give her the time she needs and not push her. However, she needs exposure and encouragement and, as always, Almost Home will support her adopters for the rest of her life. We know Skye will blossom in the right environment.”
