Leader readers have shared their thoughts on the news that Asda Living in Wrexham will be closing later this year.

Last week, (May 18) the supermarket giant announced that the store on Island Green would be closing Sunday, July 30.

Asda said that the store had been “running at a loss for a number of years” and back in February 2023 began a consultation period to discuss the future of the store on the Island Green Retail Park.

The news sparked reaction from Leader readers online, who are sad to see the store go.

Many of our readers believe that problems with the car park, where many have received “unfair” parking fines, has had an impact on the stores future.

Here’s what our readers had to say:

Lyndsey Woodfine said: “Such a shame. Sorry to the staff that have put in many years of hard work for the store to be going through this. You know who you are.”

Helen Lloyd commented: “Such a shame, it's one of the better shops in [the] town centre. Whilst the car park puts a lot of people off it's a shame they feel they can't park elsewhere and walk there, it's not that far from the free council car parks.”

Vanessa Pitsillos said: “I use to go at least once or twice a week and park in Island Green but now I just don't go because of parking. It's a real shame cause I loved George and Wilkos. I do most of my shopping out of Wrexham now.”

Lynda Roberts said: “I don’t drive and my mobility isn’t 100%. Island Green is within walking distance of the bus station. Asda Living will be sorely missed IMO. A wide range of affordable products, a cafe and a toilet all in one place. Such a shame. Let’s hope this isn’t the beginning of the end for other retailers there.”

Richard Pearce added: “People would rather spend petrol money going to Broughton than risk getting an unfair fine parking on Island Green.”
