Ruabon Library old postcards exhibition

Throughout May and June, Ruabon Library will be exhibiting a collection of vintage local postcards by local enthusiast and collector, Ennys Hughes. This collection is a fascinating display of what is sadly becoming a dying tradition in these days of digital technology. Ennys states that sending a postcard in the early part of 20th century was just like sending a text today. It was the quickest way to make contact and pass on messages, greetings or information. The first (plain) postcards were published by the Post Office in the UK in 1870 and included a pre-printed stamp, with the introduction of picture postcards in 1894. The hobby of deltiology (postcard collecting) is the second most popular hobby in the world after stamp collecting. Together, these postcards help to tell a rich and vivid story of a bygone era, with a snapshot of people's lives, special moments and memories: sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and sometimes mysterious. With a thoughtful display of both the picture postcard with its attached message, this is an interesting and remarkable exhibition.

Author of the Month

Rhys Dylan is a Welsh author who has written books in other genres for children and adults using different pen names. With his love of dark humour and Celtic noir, in 2021 he began writing the Black Beacons crime series featuring DCI Evan Warlow and his team as the main characters. The first book was The Engine House (2022) followed by seven others and with Body of Water due out soon (June 2023). Rhys Dylan lives on the edge of the Black Mountains of Wales with his wife and dog. He says that he doesn't expect to get rich as an author but he hopes his audience will find a brief escape inside his stories.

Final Whistle by Nigel Owens

Final Whistle by Nigel Owens.

Final Whistle by Nigel Owens.

Nigel Owens became the best rugby referee in the world and remains one of the game's most popular ambassadors. Rare to assert authority with a smile, and of course his humour, both on and off the pitch has become a hallmark of his refereeing style and of the man himself. Nigel Owens has been in charge of games at all levels, from slosh-in-the-mud grassroots games to the World Cup final. It wasn't an easy journey for the boy from a council house in Mynyddcerrig. He wrestled with his sexuality, facing some homophobic barbs and death threats following some of his on-field decisions. Not only did he survive his suicide attempt but positively thrived, officiating at four World Cups and blowing the whistle at seven European Cup Finals. Nigel is now a farmer, looking after a pedigree herd of Herefords near the home he shares in Pontyberem with his partner Barrie. His love for his parents and the West Wales community where he grew up shines through. Jon Gower
