A FLINTSHIRE teenager described as a 'true inspiration' has been rewarded for his volunteering efforts.

At the recent Ramblers Cymru Awards in Creigiau on the outskirts of Cardiff, nominated groups and individuals were rewarded for their dedication to walking and access.

On the night, Jamie Smith won The Ramble and Scramble category that was created to recognise a young member or volunteer who delivers great work in their community.

Jamie is 18 years old and lives in the Leeswood area.

Ramblers Cymru director, Angela Charlton said: “We want to see walking and paths at the heart of our communities. The health and wellbeing benefits of good access to green spaces are key to our post covid green recovery and to creating, happier and healthier connected communities that can thrive across Wales”.

Angela added: “Jamie is a true inspiration, and his great work is helping us achieve this. He cycles to and from volunteer work parties with his equipment and tools and promotes local Ramblers Cymru events on his own social media pages.

“Our project officers have watched him come out of his shell as he’s turned his hand to installing benches, gates and waymark posts, learning new skills as he does so and chatting with other volunteers of all backgrounds and ages.”

Jamie said: “I really enjoy the hands-on work to improve the paths. It has been great to work with the local Paths to Wellbeing officer Heather and other volunteers and learn new skills and build my confidence.”
