A MAN who 'headbutted' a woman in the street and kicked out at a police officer has been spared jail.

Malcolm Richards, of Afoneitha Road in Pen Y Cae, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court for sentence on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old had previously admitted assault, possession of a class A drug and assault of an emergency worker.

Rhian Jackson, prosecuting, told the court that on October 10 last year, Richards assaulted a woman named Cherie Torrance on High Street, Ruabon.

After initially denying it, he later pleaded guilty on the basis that he'd headbutted her but it had been his cap which had connected with her head.

Then, whilst on bail in relation to that offence, he was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

Officers had received an abandoned call from an address in Ruabon - on the road where Cherie Torrance lived.

When officers attended, they saw Richards emerge from the rear of the victim's complex of flats with his dog and pushbike.

His conditions stated he was not to enter the road in question.

When he was searched, officers found three wraps of what was later confirmed to be diamorphine.

Richards became "very aggressive" and kicked out at one of the officers, making contact with their shin.

Pierce Blythen, defending, told the court the defendant accepted all offences and was "under no illusion as to the seriousness of the offences."

The Leader:

"He is ashamed to find himself before the court," Mr Blythen said.

"He's been working with the Elms and accepts he has an issue."

District Judge Gwyn Jones handed down a 16 week custodial sentence for the assault against an officer, with four weeks concurrent for the assault against Cherie Torrance.

No separate penalty was imposed for the drugs offence, but Richards was ordered to pay £300 towards costs and £200 in compensation to the officer.

"I'm giving you a chance here," the Judge told him.

"Don't blow it."
