A MAN has lost his licence after he left his car "wedged" in a road and refused to comply with police afterwards.

Gary Townend, of Nant y Crai Lane in Gronant, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court for sentence on Tuesday.

The 61-year-old had admitted previously that when suspected of having driven a vehicle and being required to provide a specimen of breath for analysis, he failed without reasonable excuse to do so.

Rhian Jackson, prosecuting, told the court that on March 2, police were directed to a collision in Gronant.

When officers arrived at the area concerned, a female told them she'd found the vehicle crashed and had found a "very drunk" male standing next to it.

The vehicle was found "wedged" between two embankments with damage to the front and rear.

No driver was found but after confirming the car was registered to Townend, officers made their way to his home.

He answered the door, apparently "very drunk" and under the influence of intoxicants.

Townend became "immediately obstructive" when told he'd need to give a breath sample and told the police he "wasn't going anywhere."

He was arrested, despite resisting, and taken to a police station - where his refusals continued.

Chris Clark, defending, said as far as his client was concerned there had been a "misunderstanding" on the day and that he had entered an early guilty plea to the offence.

The offence was on the "lower end of the scale," he said.

The Leader:

District Judge Gwyn Jones said the offence had demonstrated a "wilful refusal" to comply with the officers and there had been "evidence of bad driving."

Townend received a £450 fine and was ordered to pay costs of £85, as well as a £180 victim surcharge.

He was also banned from driving for 30 months.
