The school recently held a celebratory event, with the focus on football, during its centenary year.

With the help of funding from Active Wrexham, supported by health and wellbeing lead at Wrexham Council, Jonathan Miller, and former acting headteacher Sean Wade, the school now has a set of new goalposts and pitches.

To mark the occasion, a match was arranged at the school, to be refereed by former Wrexham AFC captain, Robbie Evans.

The teams were made up of members from both the boys' and girls' teams.

The girls' team was started in September 2022, by Year 5 teacher Rob Parry, and has already clocked up plenty of success.

They won the Active Wrexham tournament and Urdd tournament, and will also be representing Wrexham in Newtown and Aberystwyth later this month.

Parents and special guests, which also included Kim Dutton, from Wrexham AFC Women's first team, were treated as VIPs for the game.

Cutting the ribbon on the day was Cllr Phil Wynn, lead member for education at Wrexham Council and himself a former pupil at the school.

He said: "I can't believe it was 50 years ago I was here. Football was very boy dominated, and it's great to hear the girls have realised what a beautiful game it is. The Acton girls have achieved so much in the last year."

Mr Wade, now acting headteacher at Ysgol Penygelli, added: "A huge thank you to the staff, and Rob Parry in particular. This has been a lot of hard work and responding to challenges.

"It's small actions of people going above and beyond to make a huge difference.

"And now a fantastic testament of the hard work by the teams."

Mr Parry, who was describes as "putting his heart and soul" into the day, said: "We wanted to expand the club to get more children involved and that led to a girls' team.

"Today was about promoting them too, they've done so well. But it was a chance for the parents to see them all play, to showcase the 32 children who have represented the school this year.

"Former Acton pupil Safia Middleton-Patel, Wales and Manchester Utd goalkeeper, has sent a Welsh top signed by the senior Welsh women's team, which we'll get framed for the school."

The day was also supported by local businesses ASAP Signs, Spectrum PA Hire, Wrexham Prestige Taxis and Tesco.

A business has donated a £100 voucher to the school for their Coronation raffle this week.

Darren Curtis, on behalf of Iceland Foods, presented the Iceland voucher to chair of Connah's Quay Town Council, Cllr Debbie Owen, to give to the school.

Tickets for the draw are £1, and can be bought from the school office.

The school also received a donation of £1,920.20 towards the furnishing of a sensory room and garden, from Cllr Debbie Owen. This was raised from an event she held in the Civic Hall, Connah's Quay.

Flint Male Voice Choir headlined the event, with Sophie Sterry as the support act.

This amount includes a donation from Debbie's son, Daniel Tarbox, who is a past pupil.

The school community thank all who attended and the many companies who donated money to support the event.

Ahead of Wrexham AFC's promotion win, a pupil at the school made a suggestion that would allow everyone to celebrate and help support a good cause.

In a letter to headteacher Joel Moore, pupil Oscar Hernandez Garcia wrote: "As you know, lots of children at Gwersyllt CP support Wrexham AFC.

"Over the next eight days they may get promoted to English Football League Two, which is a really big deal.

"If they get promoted I though would be a nice idea if we could have a non school uniform day.

"Pupils can wear a football kit if they wish, and pay £1, which we can donate to a local charity.

"It would be great to get a photo of us all in the newspaper celebrating."

Last Friday, children did just as Oscar suggested, raising almost £200 for Wrexham-based horse sanctuary, H.A.C.K.

The school's mini police worked with PCSO Rachael Duddle to help clean up areas in the town, concentrating on the precinct area and the skatepark.

The children were delighted to know they had made a positive difference to their community and welcomed the many 'thank you' messages they received from local residents while they were out and about.

Members of the mini police also visited Buckley's Warm Room, where they met with Carolyn Preece and Dan Rose, Flintshire County Councillors for Buckley Bistre West, and Carolyn Thomas, a Member of the Senedd for North Wales.

The Warm Rooms, above the old swimming baths, are open on a Tuesday from 9.30am-12.30pm.

Everyone is welcome for the warmth, a chat and a tea or coffee. Books, board games support and advice are all available and the children would highly recommend a visit from anyone who is looking for a safe, comfortable space, where they can connect with other members of the local community.

Pupils at the Wrexham primary school have left their mark for years to come, with a creative project.

Headteacher Rebecca Fox invited Welsh artist Rhiannon Roberts to the school, to help the youngsters create new art to go on display.

Children discussed items to include on the three large pieces, which covered a trio of themes - Wales, Wrexham and the school itself.

Following on from Wrexham AFC's promotion win, the club has taken centre stage on the Wrexham piece, which also includes the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Bellevue Park bandstand, St Giles Parish Church and many more.

The colourful pieces are done in the bright and colourful style of Rhiannon, who sketched out the ideas chosen.

Children then took it in turns to have time to paint parts of the pieces, with the Cardiff-based artist then applying her signature black outlining.

The three pieces will now be mounted in the school, for all to see and enjoy.

Children from the Wrexham primary school have been enjoying National Outdoor Learning Week in conjunction with National Resources Wales.

There have been a multitude of cross curricular activities taking place that have incorporated team games and problem solving, creative and expressive art activities, scientific experiments, texture exploration and springtime kitchen garden preparation.

Children in Year 1 and 2 have explored the Japanese art of hapa-zome; the technique is hammering flowers and leaves into fabric and is literally translated as 'leaf dye'. As experts of their newfound skills, they have worked collaboratively with Year 5 and taught the older children how the process works and we will use the material to create bunting for the Coronation celebrations.

Year 6 have worked as Environmental Health officers on behalf of National Resources Wales, investigating a report of fly-tipping within the school grounds that may have affected a vital water course. They worked collaboratively to assess the area, including measuring the water clarity and purity in the school pond and are working to identify a culprit!

These are examples of the open ended and exploratory ways in which children learn in the school's wide range of environments.

The school will be holding an open morning on Saturday, May 20 from 9.30am-11.30 am. All are welcome to attend.
