A MEMORIAL hockey match and golf competition in memory of a popular Buckley woman has been described as a 'wonderful celebration'.

The events took place on April 1 at both Buckley Leisure Centre and Mold Golf Club and celebrated the life of Jean Spence who was described as having "a heart full of love" whilst also raising money for Deeside Community Hospital.

Jean was a keen member of Buckley Hockey Club and Mold Golf Club for many years and is said to have had a "huge passion" for the game before she sadly passed away after suffering a heart attack on March 20, 2020, aged 61; just days before the UK was plunged into what would be the first lockdown - meaning just seven members of Jean's family were able to attend her funeral.

The memorial hockey match featured 'legends' versus 'current girls', which saw the legends win the game 2-0.

A balloon launch also took place prior to the match as players and spectators gathered to release the balloons whilst listening to 'How We Love' by Beth Neilson Chapman.

The golf competition was also very well supported with around 30 teams of four taking to the course in colourful attire over the course of the day - with  Dave Faulkner's and Colin Spence's team winning the title of 'most brightly dressed team' on the day!

Jean's daughter, Emma Heaton said: "The event was a wonderful celebration and was well supported by friends and family from over the years.

"The hockey game was a brilliant battle between current and past players that had the privilege of sharing a pitch with Mum at some point in their playing career.

"All those who played all signed Jean's playing shirt that will be a treasured memory for us to keep as a family.

The Leader:

"The 'legends' won the match 2-0 and, although Mum was still very much a 'current girl' when we lost her, it seems fitting that the legends secured the win in this instance!"

Emma added: "A huge thank you to 'The Rise' in Buckley as the main sponsors of the day as well as all of those local businesses who sponsored a hole for the golf competition.

"We held a raffle which contributed massively to the fundraising efforts, and we are very grateful to those who donated prizes, bought tickets or helped sell the tickets during the day.

"The evening celebration was enjoyed by all, with opportunities to share memories of Jean, sing and dance. She was always the life and soul of the party, so it was only right that we celebrated in style!"

Emma also revealed that her family was delighted to receive a video message from family all the way in New Zealand.
