A FLINT pie shop has scooped an impressive bronze medal in the British Pie Awards.

The British Pie Awards, now in its 15th year, celebrate the nation’s most delicious pies – from the traditionally British to the tantalisingly innovative and totally whacky.

Over 900 pies were entered into 23 different classes or types of pie including traditional favourites and newcomers such as Vegan and Gluten Free Pies judged by 140 judges.

This year in a surprise twist, meat-based pie entries dominated the top four classes for the first time since 2019, with Beef & Any Flavour topping the entry rankings.

Black's Pie's, located in Flint, was nominated for their premium pork pies after proving a hit with locals and they were delighted to come away with a bronze medal at such a prestigious event.

Chris Blackwell of Black's Pies said: "It is a great honour to be awarded a bronze award at the British pie awards 2023 for our premium pork pie as well as obtaining four prestigious awards at the biggest butchery event in Europe all in one week.

"I give great thanks to the dedication of my family for the continued support. Black’s Pies started as a dream of mine and with their support I have been able to make that dream a reality and open the home of Black’s Pies above our family run fish and chip shop at the crescent in Flint.

"Black’s Pies has a good customer base and are available to purchase across Flintshire and Wrexham."

Dr Matthew O’Callaghan Chairman of the awards said: "This is a great celebration of the nation’s favourite food.

"There were some outstanding pies entered from the Tip of Scotland to the Toe of England.

"The Supreme Champion or ‘Pie of Pies’ was a worthy winner. Called Moo & Blue - it was a beef, ale and stilton pie made by Brockleby’s in Leicestershire."

Blacks Pies were among those championed by Leader readers last week during British Pie Week - as well as others across the region, including Hulsons in Mold and Pie’d Piper in Ty pawb, Wrexham, when we asked - 'where can you find the best pie?'
