A Flintshire dog rescue is counting the cost of saving lives as three dogs who have come from the pound are now on the mend.

Almost Home Dog Rescue, in Nercwys, prioritises dogs who are in the local pounds, as they are at risk of being put to sleep after seven days if no one comes forward to claim them.

Over the years the rescue has had a wide range of dogs from the pound, from eight-week-old pups to 15-year-old dogs, and a huge diversity of breeds.

The three most recent dogs taken in by the rescue from the pound are Alfie, a six-month-old Irish terrier; Delilah, a five-year-old lab and Django, a two-year-old mastiff.

Together, the dogs have cost the rescue £4,630, on top of the cost of other residents and the rescue’s 16 forever fostered, whose medical bills they cover for life.

The rescue is in constant need of support, and donations are welcome.

Here is what Alife, Delilah, and Django have all needed since they arrived in the care of AHDR:

Alfie

He came to the rescue skinny and limping. After further vet examination - he was admitted into their care and was on a drip for 48 hours, with a very high temperature, then sent back to foster on a lot of medication.

After a few weeks of being up and down and numerous tests, he was starting to feel better, but it was clear to see he was in pain with his leg. After x-rays and a specialist review - this lad now needs his leg re-breaking and then pinning. This is due to an old unfixed injury on his growth plate.

Alfie’s foster family will be doing a sponsored walk-up Moel Famau on Saturday, March 25 to help raise some money towards his ever-growing vet bill. To support their walk, you can donate here: https://almosthome.dog/donate/

The rescue said: “Good luck guys and we are so blessed to have you on our team of dedicated people.”

Delilah

She came to the rescue extremely skinny. She should’ve weighed around 30kg but was only 18kg and had a nasty wound on her rump.

Delilah went straight into foster and was doing well. However, after a few days, she stopped eating, she was rushed straight to the vet and tests were done. She was losing the weight she has just gained and couldn’t afford to lose.

She was admitted to the vet on a drip, hoping she would eat and drink, again after a few weeks of being in and out of the vet, all was looking up. Sadly, over the last few days, she’s gone downhill again. She’s now booked in for more scans and tests. Sadly the vets think she may have cancer of the liver, this is not confirmed as of yet.

AHDR said: “Please keep everything cross for this girl!”

Django

He was described as out of condition and limping. He was very tired and as the day went on, it was clear he was in a lot of pain with his back legs.

The next morning, he went for X-rays, sadly his left hip is deformed, resulting in arthritis and his right leg is arthritic too. This boy is microchipped, sadly not registered but its origin is The Netherlands. This means it’s highly likely he has been imported to be a stud dog.

The rescue said: “We are doing the best we can for all three of these guys, we can’t thank our fosterers enough. We just hope they make it through what’s ahead of them!”
