TO COINCIDE with British Pie Week, we were keen to find the best pie in the region.

We asked Leader readers to share with us where to get hold of the best pies; and there was one overwhelming winner - Hulsons in Mold.

Mike Jones even posted: "Hulsons Mold, hands down, and all the staff are so helpful it's [the] best pie shop around North Wales."

With this in mind, I set out to Mold town centre to try a famous Hulsons pie during British Pie Week (March 6-12) and to find out what makes the bakery so popular within the community.

Located on Wrexham Street, Hulsons has been a staple of the town since it first opened its doors back in 1933, with the family business stretching all the way back to 1882.

The Leader:

Upon entering the shop, it was already filled with customers awaiting their national pie week fix.

I asked one loyal customer what she believes is the reason for the bakery's success and she responded: "I've been coming here for 40 years, the service is good, the staff are friendly, and the food is great.

"If people go away, [from Mold] they always come back here."

It's not just pies that Hulsons specialises in, as there is a wide selection of other mouth-watering pastries, cheeses, and meats to choose from.

Saffron Hulson is the daughter of owner, John, and when asked what makes their pies so popular she said: "It's an old family recipe and people just keep coming back.

"Wednesdays and Saturdays are our most popular days, as this is when the market takes place - sometimes they are queuing out of the door!"

When asked which pie flies off the shelf the most, without hesitation, Saffron responded: "The pork pie definitely!"

Saffron then proceeded to give me one of their famous pork pies to try - the moment I'd been waiting for.

I must admit, it was quite the feeling to have arguably North Wales' most popular pie in my hands and I have to say, it certainly lived up to its reputation!

The Leader:

Shop owner, John Hulson said: "Thanks to all the readers for voting for us and to all our customers for supporting us through lockdown."

It's easy to see why Hulsons pork pies are a firm favourite within the community, it left me eager to try the other selections! I'm sure I'll be back.

The flurry of pie nominations didn't stop there either, as there were plenty of other honorable mentions.

Emma Griffiths said: "S J Bebbington butchers, just won a national competition for their pies."

Ali Jones commented: "Pie’d Piper in Ty pawb" (Wrexham)

Carol Hazeldene agreed: "Ty Pawb - amazing pies."

Kim Bower added: "Definitely Prices in Shotton - delicious!"

Lee Williams posted: "Price's Butchers, Connah's Quay."

Maggie Eaton-Jones said: "Nick’s pies on Mold market are the best ever."

One thing is for sure, we aren't short of popular pie shops in our region!
