As schools close for February half term, there are plenty of free activities and events to keep youngsters occupied in Flintshire and Wrexham.
For schools in Wrexham and Flintshire February half term starts on Monday, February 20, and children don't return back to the classroom until the following Monday, February 27.
With the current cost of living crisis affecting families across the UK many parents may be searching for free activities that their children will enjoy.
Here is a list of free things to do with children in Wrexham and Flintshire this half term.
1. Swimming
Wrexham Council is offering free swimming at activity and leisure centres in Wrexham throughout Half Term, February 20 until February 26.
They’re available for the under 16’s at the following times:
- Waterworld Leisure and Activity Centre
Tuesday – 10am – 11am
Thursday – 1pm – 2pm
- Gwyn Evans Leisure and Activity Centre
Tuesday – 2.15pm – 3.15pm
Thursday – 3pm – 4pm
- Chirk Leisure and Activity Centre
Friday – 12.30pm – 13.30
Sunday – 1pm – 2pm
There’s also a family swim at Chirk on Friday between 11pm and 12noon.
In Flintshire, Aura Wales has a variety of free swim sessions available for under 17's at the following times:
- Buckley Leisure Centre
Saturday - 1.15pm -2.45pm and a (Girls only free swim under 16) 2.45pm - 3.30pm.
- Jade Jones Pavillion - Flint
Sunday - 1.15pm - 2.45pm
- Mold Leisure Centre
11.45am - 2.15pm
2. Half term activties at Ty Pawb in Wrexham
There are family activities taking place at Tŷ Pawb every day throughout half term.
All activities are either pay what you can – or totally free. Some activities also include a breakfast or packed lunch.
- Multilingual Family Art Club - February 18 - 10am - 12pm
- Lantern Workshop - February 21 - 1pm-3pm
- Children's Bo-Staff Workshop (using fabric) - February 23 - 10.30am-12.30pm and 1.30pm - 3.30pm.
- Botanical Drawing - February 24 - 10am-12 pm

3. Eat-out offers for children
- Morrisons cafe: Under-16s can eat free from the kids menu, with each adult meal costing £4.49 purchased.
- ASDA cafe: - Until February 22 - Children up to the age of 16 are able to get a free bowl of Quaker porridge from 8am to 12pm every day until February 22 in 205 of Asda’s cafes, on top of the existing main meal for £1 offer.
- Premier Inn: Up to two under-16s can eat breakfast for free when an adult orders a full Premier Inn Breakfast (£9.99).
- M&S: Until February 24 - Children given a free Munch Meal when accompanying an adult that spends £5.
- Tesco cafes: Until February 24 - Under-16s eat free on weekdays when accompanying an adult that makes a purchase of as little as 60p on their club card.
- Dunelm Mill: Children eat for free from kids menu Monday-Friday when accompanying an adult that spends £4 or more at Dunelm Pausa cafe.
4. Craft and nature activities with Groundwork North Wales
- Stepping into Spring event - Minera Lead Mines, Tuesday, February 21, 1pm-3pm. Families are asked to book this event.
Families will have a chance to get creative and decorate plant pots, plant them up with beautiful spring plants and take them home to enjoy. A wild and wonderful nature themed scavenger hunt is also on offer. Families are asked to book on to this event.
- Fire Pit and Crafts Event - Knowle Hill Nature Reserve, in Buckley, Tuesday, February 21, 10am-12pm.
The event promises to be a magical morning with a fire pit to warm up by and a variety of nature-based crafts to take part in.
- Family Friendly Fun Bushcraft session - Community Gardens in Connah's Quay on Wednesday, February 22, 1pm-3 pm and booking is essential.
Families can enjoy making bird feeders and warming up next to a campfire whilst doing some outdoor cooking in the Community Gardens.
- Lantern Sessions - Families can book to attend at Alyn Waters on Monday, February 20, at 10am; Ty Pawb on Tuesday, February 21, at 1pm or Minera Lead Mines on Thursday, February 23, at 10am, and a drop-in session is available from 10.30am-2.30 pm on Saturday, February 18 at St Marys Church Hall, in Ruabon.
Following the workshops families can bring their lanterns home and join the Lantern Parade on March 1 at Queens Square, Wrexham at 6pm.
