LEADER readers have been sending in their views following the announcement that two more north Wales care homes are set to close.

On Wednesday, February 1, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board confirmed that both the Morfa Newydd (Greenfield) and Gwastad Hall (Cefn-y-Bedd) care homes will close in the coming weeks.

It’s understood that the staff in both homes have been given four weeks’ notice and that the owners have been working with Flintshire and Wrexham councils to find alternative accommodation for residents.

A further 91 beds will be lost during the closures, which follow on from the 16-bed Bay Court Care Home in Kinmel Bay and the 28-bed Trewythen Hall Care Home in Gresford also closing.

BCUHB said it 'wholeheartedly sympathises' with those affected by the closures.

Both Flintshire and Wrexham councils say they are working with their respective care homes to find suitable accommodation for residents currently living at both sites.

Readers have been getting in touch with the Leader to let us know what they think of the situation.

Charlie Anne told us: "Absolutely devastating news to both the residents and the employees. The staff at Gwastad are incredible and they make you feel like family.

"If this had of happened six months ago, we would have had to move my Nain who was towards the end of her life somewhere else, so my heart goes out to any family that is now in that situation."

Donna Jones said: "So sad to hear Gwastad Hall is closing. Amazing staff and residents have to suffer. The staff were amazing with my nan. They gave her the best care. Absolutely gutted."

Ryan Jones added: "My Taid passed away in Morfa Newydd, the staff were brilliant and so caring, this is gutting."

Stew Roberts said: "Hopefully they can be purchased at reasonable price to allow Private Investors to acquire- we need more Care Homes in Wales to assist the Social Care crisis not less!"

Philip Phillips wrote: "Devastating news for the residents, the staff and their families. It is difficult enough to adapt and to be reconciled to residential care without having to find a new home."

Gaynor Hooson said: "Heartbreaking my mum lives in the Gwastad the staff are amazing they are all out on the 27th."

Mario Kreft MBE, the chair of Care Forum Wales, said the sector was suffering because of a triple whammy of “irresponsibly low fees”, dire staff shortages and bureaucratic red tape.
