Overloaded vehicles, defective tyres and no insurance were just some of the offences detected by police during an operation this week.

The joint road safety operation was carried out by the Roads Policing Unit in Deeside on Tuesday (January 31).

Vehicle checks on commercial vehicles were carried out on the weighbridge involving officers from the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) and 15 offences relating to vehicle overloads were found.

A vehicle was seized for having no insurance, three were found without a valid MOT and 12 vehicle prohibitions were issued.

Sergeant Medwyn Williams from the Roads Policing Unit said: “In total 35 vehicles were stopped – including vans, light goods vehicles and HGV’s. Sixty per cent of those stopped had an offence. This is clearly very worrying.

“Driving an overloaded vehicle affects both its handling and braking capabilities which in turn significantly increases the risk of the driver being involved in a traffic collision, putting themselves and other road users at risk.

“To hold a driving licence is a privilege and responsibility, especially for those who rely on our road networks to make a living. It is essential that drivers are aware that it is their responsibility to ensure that their vehicle is roadworthy before commencing a journey.

“These checks are regularly carried out by the team and more will be done in the near future – this is all part of our ongoing commitment to keeping the roads safe for all. Please heed the warning.”
