Children at the Wrexham primary school can enjoy the magic of the outdoors, with their very own Hagrid's Hut.

With the help of pupils on the school's Eco Council, a new outdoor classroom has been built to compliment the school's outdoor education provision and provide more opportunities for children to learn, play and explore all year round.

The design and colour were chosen by pupils then 'Accio!' Hagrid's Hut appeared on the school field.

Aled Wyatt, reception teacher and Penygelli's trained Forest School leader, is excited about the new learning opportunities the outdoor classroom will bring.

He said: "We want our pupils to be excited about coming to school and Hagrid's Hut will enable us to spark the children's curiosity within a creative learning space".

Mr. Wade, Headteacher, added: "Schools should be a magical place for children. At Penygelli we strive to provide excellence for our pupils and our new outdoor classroom is the first part of a significant investment by the school in high quality resources to inspire and support learning.

"Many more exciting new things are already on the way including a selection of engaging learning resources for the nursery and Foundation Phase, two separate climbing frames suitable for different age children - one with towers and slides - plus an outdoor table tennis table and even some swings. Learning is going to be lots of fun at Penygelli."

Penygelli children are extremely excited to investigate Hagrid's Hut and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Three hardworking Flint High School students, including twin sisters, have all achieved the highest grade after sitting an early entry mathematics and numeracy GCSE exam.

Twins Olivia and Poppy Francis-Owen, and Amelia Janecka, all Year 11, each gained an A* and plan to study the subject at A level.

The girls, who all aspire to go to university, were asked during Year 10 if they would like to prepare for early entry so that they could then do another qualification in maths that would get them ready for taking it at A level.

They all very much wanted to take the opportunity and, following a successful mock in September, they went on to sit their exams.

In preparation, the students were given an accelerated scheme of work in class and Tracey Grandy, curriculum leader mathematics and associate head, provided them with specific online support and revision through the school's revision portal, which they could access at home.

Ms Grandy said: "These girls have a positive, can-do attitude to learning and are incredibly self-motivated and hardworking, which makes a huge difference; success at GCSE and A level requires focus in class and personal effort, and Poppy, Olivia and Amelia have those qualities. They ask questions, are independent and are actively engaged in their learning. As their teacher I supported and guided them, but the hard work was theirs.

"I am incredibly proud of them, as are their parents who have also been very supportive and encouraged them in their success. These talented girls have an exciting future ahead of them and I look forward to helping them when they join our sixth form to study mathematics at A level."

Member of the Senedd for North Wales recently welcomed pupils from the Wrexham primary school to the Welsh Parliament.

During the visit, Mr Rowlands, Shadow Minister for Local Government, spoke briefly about his role as an MS and took questions from his young visitors.

He said: “It was fantastic to welcome the pupils and staff from Ysgol Rhostyllen and talk to them about what we do as members of the Welsh Parliament.

“It was great to see the children so enthusiastic about visiting the Senedd and they asked me a lot of challenging and insightful questions about local and national issues.

“I think it is so important children and young people learn more about politics and the Welsh Parliament. I really hope they all enjoyed their time here and I would certainly encourage more schools in North Wales to come and visit.”

Staff and pupils across the Dee Valley Federation, made up of three small schools, Froncysyllte, Garth and Pentre CIW, are celebrating a number of successes at the start of the new academic year.

Pupils from across the Federation took part in a writing competition, organised by Wrexham Rotary Club.

Pupils from Year 3 and above wrote a short story or poem about the theme of peace. Four entries were selected from each school. The entries were judged and a winner from each school was selected.

In a special awards ceremony last month, the winners were announced and pupils were presented with a voucher.

The winning entries will now go on to represent the three schools at Rotary District Level, competing against entries from schools in the North Wales, West Cheshire, Wirral and Merseyside area.

Headteacher Nathan Williams said: "It was lovely seeing so many wonderful entries from children across our Federation. A huge thank you to the members of Wrexham Rotary Club who gave up their time to explain the competition to our children, judge the entries and visited all three schools to present the prizes to the selected winners. Having seen all of the entries, I know what a difficult task the judges had."

The Federation entered a team into the Indoor Athletics Festival held at Plas Madoc Leisure Centre last week. The team had a brilliant time taking part in events such as the vertical jump, standing long jump, triple jump, foam javelin, sitting throw, speed bounce and various running events.

They also had the opportunity to mix with pupils from the other Federation schools. The whole Federation community were so proud when the team finished in third place and were awarded a medal each.
