A Wrexham chef is set to represent Wales in an international event.

Sion Hughes, 25, who currently works at The Spa at Carden Park, will be competing in the Global Chefs Challenge against some of the best chefs in North Europe with the top two qualifying for the global final at the Worldchefs Congress and Expo 2024 in Singapore.

Sion is no stranger to international competitions having been a member of the Junior Culinary Team Wales which won silver and bronze medals at the Culinary World Cup in Luxembourg last November.

He said: “I am excited to be representing Wales in this individual competition. I have done individual competitions in the past but this will be a completely new experience and will be my first time as a senior chef.

Looking to the future, Sion plans to compete for a place in the Senior Culinary Team Wales.

“The Culinary Olympics is just over a year away, so hopefully I will get the chance to compete for Wales again,” he added.

Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, said: “I am delighted to hear that Wrexham born, Sion Hughes, 25, head chef at The Spa at Carden Park, near Chester, has been chosen to represent Wales at a Global Chefs Challenge European heat in Italy.

“What a wonderful opportunity for Sion. As a former Junior Chef of Wales winner he has competed in many international competitions and is obviously a seasoned and extremely talented competitor.

“It is great to see young people from my region flourishing and taking centre stage in international events and I wish him every luck in next month’s competition.”
