WORK is ongoing to give a building in Wrexham's city centre "a new lease of life".

Scaffolding is currently up at 58 Hope Street in Wrexham and has been for over a week.

The building, which has been vacant since around 2018, now has new owners who are hoping to improve the fortunes of the four-story building, which neighbours the Central Arcade.

A spokesperson for Wrexham Council said: "The scaffolding has been erected to support the refurbishment of 58 Hope street which is at the front left-hand side of the entrance to Central Arcade.

"This building is four stories high and is being refurbished under the townscape heritage scheme.

"This building has been vacant approximately since 2018 and is a building that is listed and the new owners are working with us to give it a new lease of life."

However, the erection of the scaffolding has had a negative effect on business within the arcade.

One business owner said that footfall had been dreadful since the scaffolding went up 10 days ago.

They said: "I can count on one hand the number of customers we have had in the shop today (January 17).

"I fully understand why it is needed and have no issue whatsoever with that as long as it is being used, which it is not.

"The council should consult with surrounding stakeholders then state why and when it is going up and set a deadline as to when it comes down.

"It is extremely detrimental to the footfall through the Arcade which affects the businesses within."
