THERE is reason to celebrate at on Wrexham primary school, after one of their pupils won a special award.
Five-year-old Elsie Purcell-Kempster, who attends Y Canol, Ysgol Heulfan, in Gwersyllt, has been awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Child of Wales Award 2023.
The award shines light on some of the most inspirational children in Wales, and recognises the efforts and achievement of courageous children and their families.

Elsie was born with a rare life-limiting generic condition called Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome. This has resulted in significant developmental delay and complex health needs for Elsie.
Most of her early life has been filled with multiple hospital appointments, admissions and surgeries. However, despite her daily struggles, Elsie embraces life to its full.
Headteacher Julia Thomas said: "She is such a sociable young girl and spreads happiness to everyone around her. She is developing confidence and thriving. Elsie is rarely seen without a beautiful smile on her face, a smile which is known to infect a population."

Elsie inspired her mum Kayleigh to become a member of the Board of Directors for the Smith-Lemli-Opitz Foundation. Together, they embrace Elsie's journey to support other children and young families across the world.
The youngster has also participated in medical research with hope to help improve the lives of other children with Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome.

Elsie was nominated to the Child of Wales Awards 2023 and the judges were inspired by her story. They noted her spirit, determination and courage to be an example to all.
Elsie was awarded a Certificate of Merit, which she has been encouraged to celebrate with her friends in school.
Mrs Thomas added: "We are so very proud of Elsie. She is amazing and is loved by everyone she meets. Her smile lights up the room and it is a pleasure to have her in our school. Well done Elsie."
