A WREXHAM resident was recently fined more than £400 after he paid someone to take his waste, which was later fly-tipped.

Wrexham Council is reminding residents to check the laws surrounding fly-tipping before making the same mistake.

The man was fined £440 with costs of £145 and a Victim Surcharge of £44 after he paid someone to take his waste - and didn’t do the proper checks that they had a legitimate waste carriers licence first.

The waste was removed from a home in Ruabon and later found fly-tipped on Church Street, Penycae.

As householders we all have a 'duty of care' to make sure that anyone we use to remove our rubbish has an official Waste Carrier Licence and you can check anyone out on the Natural Resources Wales website.

Most legitimate companies will happily show you their Licence and assure you that they will dispose of it responsibly at a properly designated waste site.

If they don’t have one then it’s very likely that your rubbish is going to be fly-tipped and if it’s traced back to you then you risk a fine of up to £5,000 and prosecution.

Wrexham Council officers can also issue the householder with a £300 fixed penalty notice as an alternative to prosecution.

Darren Williams, Chief Environment and Technical Officer, said: “We take fly tipping extremely seriously and always check to see if the culprit can be identified.

"As this case shows failing to make the proper checks with Natural Resources Wales can lead you to court and a hefty fine.”
