The gritting will take place this afternoon at 2pm on priority routes, at 11pm on priority routes and at 7.30am on high routes.

A council spokesperson said: “We have a full supply of salt that is used on our priority routes that is replenished regularly. We receive weather and road surface temperature forecasts daily throughout the winter and decisions are taken around 1pm each day based on the forecast for the following 24 hours.

"We monitor road conditions via our forecast provider and our weather stations 24/7.

"The teams are always on standby to respond to any precautionary treatment or reactive treatment necessary in the event of any unexpected change in the forecast or road conditions.

“Gritting has taken place over the last few days and we also have plans in place to cover extended periods of severe weather to keep areas such as sheltered accommodation and school routes as clear and as safe as possible.

“We ask that people take care when out in the current conditions, wear appropriate clothing, look out for elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours and drive safely.”
