A 'drunken lout' who dropped his trousers and exposed himself to a woman on a train has been handed a fine.

Daniel Scott Campbell, of Maes y Dre in Abergele, appeared at Mold Magistrates Court for sentence on Thursday.

The 33-year-old had previously admitted that in February, whilst on board a train between Chester and Prestatyn, he intentionally exposed his genitals intending that someone would see them and be caused alarm or distress.

Rhian Jackson, prosecuting, said the service was busy with passengers travelling home.

A group of three males were loudly chanting football songs in what was described by others as a "rowdy" manner.

When the service arrived at a Flintshire station, one of the men - Campbell - was asked to settle down by a woman on the train.

Campbell moved towards her and leaned in "as if to kiss her," with the woman turning away and telling him: "Don't bother."

But the males who were with Campbell started to chant: "Get your a** out for the boys," following which the defendant dropped his pants and exposed his genitals.

His friends were "cheering him on," the court heard, and the woman told him: "Put it away, it's not appropriate."

She said she felt disgusted by Campbell's actions.

When the service arrived in Prestatyn, security guards were informed of the offence and asked to remove the men from the train.

Ms Jackson said in interview, the defendant was shown CCTV footage and made full admissions.

He said he was ashamed of himself, and after having been drinking all day, he remembered nothing of the offence.

The Leader:

Simon Simmons said his client, a landfill worker with one child, had minimised his alcohol intake and had not been out since the offence.

He said Campbell had found the period of time since his release on bail and the court appearance to be a nerve-racking one.

District Judge Gwyn Jones described the offence as a "stupid drunken" action, as opposed to one carried out for sexual gratification.

He said: "This was extremely unpleasant - not only for the people travelling on the train, but more importantly for those in close proximity to you and your drunken friends.

"What may be banter [to you] may be totally and utterly offensive to others, and it's clear you had drunk far more than was good for you.

"You would then appear to have been egged on by others to pull your pants down, exposing your bottom and genitals."

The Judge described the offending as "completely and utterly crass stupidity and drunken, loutish behaviour."

He fined the defendant £600 and ordered him to pay £400 in compensation to the victim, in addition to £85 costs.
