A FLINTSHIRE knitting group has been leading the way in donating items for worthy causes through their talented skills.

The group, based in Caffi Isa, Mold, meets every Monday morning to have a ‘knit and natter’.

Members gather to knit items such as blankets, scarves, gloves, and also clothing for premature babies to donate to a wide range of local causes – whilst putting the world to rights with an endless supply of tea, coffee, and toast.

Formed in 2016, the group also acts as a great way for older people to come together and form lasting friendships, a sense of community, and belonging.

The Leader:

When asked what the best thing about the group was, Gwyneth Griffiths simply answered: “Meeting people - coming out of the house and meeting people.

“We learn something every week as well. Whether it be a different stitch, a different pattern, and whoever is in need we will help.

“It’s also brilliant knowing what I’m doing is helping someone else."

Fellow group member, Lena Morris added:” I’ve been coming to the group for a few years now. I’ve got family but I do live on my own, so it’s nice to come out of the house."

A spokesperson who helps with the organisation of the group said: “The items the ladies knit go onto causes such as Nightingale House, Kid’s Bank in Chester, Renew which is a local charity, premature babies, Macmillan, Alzheimer’s, and local refugees. If we find there’s a cause we will respond as positively as we can.”

The Leader:

Councillor Mared Eastwood, chair of Flintshire Council, said: “It makes people feel valued. There’s an awful lot of shared experiences here as well, so (members) don’t have to come and explain.

“Knitting is the focus but not a requirement. Anyone can join.”

Cllr Teresa Carberry, a close supporter of the group added: “I don’t knit, but I was thinking of austerity in the winter and what were people going to do, so I looked around to see if there’s a knitting group and I couldn’t find one in Mold.

“So, I popped up here to see them and see if they would help me.

“It’s a support network too, they’re friends outside of here as well and some of them meet up in the week to do knitting as well so it’s nice. Also, you can keep warm in here."

The great work the group does goes on to really make a difference to those who may be vulnerable and struggling to keep warm in the winter months.

If you would like to join the friendly group of knitters, the group meet every Monday from 9am at the Caffi Isa in Mynydd Isa Library Community Centre.
