Oliver King, defending, told the court it was "clear he has some personal problems," which was evidenced in CCTV footage.
He described his client's behaviour on the video as "odd," and invited the court to adjourn the sentencing in order to allow for a psychiatric report and a pre-sentence report to be completed.
Judge Nicola Saffman agreed, describing the case as "unusual and complex."
Thompson was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on December 15.
