AN EYESORE village post office is to be brought back to life as permission has been granted to turn it into a restaurant and coffee shop.
Wrexham Council’s planning committee has given approval for the redevelopment of the former post office and convenience store on Station Road at the heart of Rossett.
The site was previously a Post Office and Spar store but has been vacant for a number of years. According to the plans, the restaurant will be open from 8.30am to 10pm with no late night opening proposed.
Resident Tony Murphy spoke at the meeting, stating that while he was supportive of seeing the building refurbished, there were concerns about the parking issues it might cause.
There is no on-site parking available to potential customers, but there is a car park further along Station Road.
Local member, Rossett Cllr Hugh Jones (Con) was invited to speak and said the majority of residents who lived across from the site were in favour.
He added that it was an opportunity to improve a village eyesore and the appearance of Station Road.
Cllr Jones said: “I’ve listened carefully to a significant number of representations I’ve had from residents and I have to say the majority who have contacted me are the residents that live directly opposite the location.
“Without exception, those residents all support this application and I think it’s an opportunity for the village to bring back into use an eyesore which is really deteriorating and making a blot on the landscape of what is actually a conservation area.

“There are two issues; one is the ability to improve the presentation and appearance of Station Road and the second is the issue of car parking.
“From my point of view I’m satisfied having listened to the residents most affected, having read the report and listened to what the (planning) officers have said that this is an application to support.”
Planning officer Matthew Phillips added that although it has been vacant for some time, there is an established use for the premises.
The planning committee voted unanimously to approve the plans.
