A McColl's store in Wrexham is set to close after Morrisons revealed plans to shut 132 stores across the UK.

The McColl's store on High Street in Ruabon will close in the new year, as will the Post Office facilities inside.

Around 1,300 jobs are at risk at McColl’s after Morrisons revealed proposals to shut 132 loss-making stores in the convenience chain it bought earlier this year.

Morrisons say that all those at risk of losing their jobs, will be offered new roles elsewhere in the company.

The supermarket giant sealed a deal to buy its troubled rival for £190 million in a rescue deal in May.

Morrisons said it expects some McColl’s stores to return to profitability as part of its turnaround plans but highlighted that there are “132 stores where there is no realistic prospect of achieving a breakeven position in the medium term”.

The supermarket group said 55 of the 132 stores earmarked for closure include Post Office counters and will therefore shut next year, following their busy Christmas period.

One of those 55 Post Office stores is the McColl's in Ruabon.

The overhaul plan will see Morrisons convert McColl’s stores to its own Morrisons Daily brand.

Joseph Sutton, Morrisons’ convenience, online and wholesale director, said: “We have a great deal of work to do but there’s no question that McColl’s is a business with strong potential.

“We very much regret the proposed closure of 132 loss-making stores but it is, very sadly, an important step towards the regeneration of the business."

Ruabon Councillor Dana Davies said: “Our only local Payzone shop is McColl’s, so prepayment meter customers will be adversely affected. Add to that the loss of the Post Office and possibly our only cashpoint and Ruabon is hit badly by this as many cannot afford travel costs to access these services elsewhere.”

Member of the Senedd Ken Skates said: “This is extremely disappointing news. I had hoped the Morrisons takeover would be a positive for Ruabon if the crucial services Dana highlights could be accommodated elsewhere in the village, but to lose McColl’s and everything it offers would be a real blow.”

He added: “Dana and I will be making contact with the Post Office this week to establish what its plans are to relocate counter services within the village.

“We will also work with the company however we can to make sure that all employees affected by this announcement will be found alternative jobs and will be seeking assurances over the future of the only cashpoint in Ruabon. That cannot be lost.”
