A charity fundraising group set up in memory of Flintshire brothers has been nominated for an award.

Hoppo's Hi 5's has been shortlisted for the Innovative Fundraiser award in the 2022 Heart Hero Awards, run by the British Heart foundation.

Hoppo's Hi 5's is a charity fundraising initiative in memory of Paul and David Hopkins, two brothers from Mold, who tragically died at the young ages of 24 and 30 respectively.

The group has raised over £40,000 for the British Heart Foundation through several events.

Writing on facebook, Mitch James, head of organising for Hoppo's Hi 5's, said: "I'm bursting with pride for those who volunteer their support and incredibly thankful to everyone who has donated over the years."

The charity was set up in memory of Paul Hopkins who died in 2009 after suffering a seizure.

Paul is described as being a larger-than-life character who lived life to the full and was a much loved member of the community.

In 2009, the Hopkins family hosted a 16-team touch rugby tournament at Mold Rugby club to raise money in memory of Paul.

The tournament has been hosted annually and has grown significantly year on year, raising £20,000 for the British Heart Foundation.

Tragically, on Christmas Eve last year Paul's brother David Hopkins passed away after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2017.

David is described as being a "kind and caring young man, softly spoken with an appetite for all things adventure."

David's tragic death has given the charity fundraising group a renewed purpose in their fundraising activities to raise even more money into life saving research.

In 2021, 19 volunteer cyclists completed a 220-mile journey over three days from Buckingham Palace to Mold Rugby Club for Hoppo's Hi 5's smashing their initial fundraising target of £10,000 by over double the amount.

As the charity bike ride was such a resounding success, Hoppo's Hi 5's have set the challenge of cycling from the remaining home nation capitals - Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff over the next three years.

Many miles, breakdowns, bad weather and hills will be overcome to raise money in the memory of two incredible young men and raise money for lifesaving research.

The second leg of the cycling challenge will take place in July 2023 from Edinburgh to Mold Rugby Club.

Thirty cyclists will undertake the 270-mile trip with 16,000ft of elevation.

The Leader:

Hoppo's are currently £24,000 away from their target of raising £100,000 for charity by 2025 through fundraising rugby tournaments and bike rides.

The fundraising group is currently looking for sponsorship over the next three years to aid them in reaching their target.

Writing via the Hoppo's Hi 5 facebook page, a spokesperson said: "The bike ride is a logistical operation which comes with a significant financial cost, having to transport cyclists and kit.

"Therefore, we are appealing to potential sponsors to support our cause. All costings can be made available to sponsors for scrutiny, with any surplus funds being donated straight to the BHF via JustGiving.

"We will have several options for displaying company logo's/messages on our custom kit."

Those interested in sponsoring Hoppo's Hi 5's can contact Mitch James at 07400788929.

Representatives from the group will attend the fifth annual Heart Hero Awards in London on Thursday, December 1.
