PLANS to turn a former Deeside pub into apartments have been backed for approval despite a local councillor's concerns over the proposal.

Next week, Flintshire Council's planning committee will decide on application to convert the former Hare & Hounds pub, at 315 High Street in Connah's Quay, into 11 apartments. The pub closed in February of this year.

The proposal seeks to provide accommodation over 4 floors (ground and three floors above) it is proposed to convert the entire building into 11 self-contain apartments with 8 of them being 1 bed and 3 apartment being 2 bedroom. The apartments are split three per floor from ground level to the second floor with two apartments on the third floor. The apartments are designed to meet the requirements of the affordable housing market.

Connah's Quay councillor, Bernie Attridge has raised "serious concerns" over traffic and parking, the disposal of waste from the apartments and "inappropriate development in an area with excessive flats apartments and HMOs".

Councillor Attridge said there is serious anti-social behaviour in the same area. He added: "Even North Wales Police tell me weekly that no more flats are needed in this location."

Nevertheless, Flintshire Council planning officers have recommended the scheme for approval.

Planning officer, Charlotte Lloyd-Randall, said in a report on the application: "The proposal provides sufficient amenity space for the number of units. The proposal provides a sufficient amount of parking and is located within a central location in close proximity to public transport and active travel.

"The proposal has been designed sympathetically using matching materials and would not have a detrimental impact on the character of the surrounding area. Given the location of the development, and with due regard to the relevant planning policies and to considerations of sustainability this site is considered to be an appropriate location for this form of development."
