A POPULAR Wrexham band has given recognition to the 'hero' doctor who has helped their lead singer through his battle with cancer.

Declan Swans have become increasingly more well-known ever since appearing on Disney Plus' Welcome to Wrexham series.

They have found themselves at the top of charts across the world and their song 'Always Sunny in Wrexham' has become a hit at the Racecourse ground too.

Anyone who has watched Welcome to Wrexham will be familiar with their lead singer Michael 'Scoot' Hett who bravely opened up about his cancer battle on the show.

He revealed that he had been through chemotherapy after a tumour was discovered on his colon.

In a scene filmed in his home along with wife Wendy, he tells her, while drawing up a bucket list, that 'seeing Wrexham get promoted back to the football league' is at the top of that list.

Today (Friday, October 21), both Michael and the Declan Swans page took to Twitter to thank the 'hero' doctor who had been by his side throughout that difficult period in his life.

Dr Abozed Ben Sassi of Wrexham Maelor Hospital carried out two emergency operations on Michael to effectively save his life.

Posting a picture of Dr Ben Sassi in a Declan Swans shirt, Michael wrote: "Managed to finally get a t shirt to this absolute legend Mr Abozed Ben Sassi.

"This man gave me two Emergency operations and basically saved my life. Myself and my family would like to thank Mr Ben Sassi, his team and everyone connected to Wrexham Maelor Hospital. What a guy."

The band - made up of Michael, drummer Ben Jones and guitarist Mark Jones wrote: "The main man who kept Scoot here to tell the tale. Your a hero mr Sassi and we thank you for what you did to save him."

Declan Swans, who have been performing together for over 20 years, are dubbed as a 'Wrexham Comedy Indie Alt band'.

They can regularly be seen and heard performing at venues across the Wrexham area.
