A DISQUALIFIED driver got behind the wheel after his heavily pregnant girlfriend became uncomfortable, a court heard.

Daniel Georgiev, of Bryn Hafod, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old admitted that on August 4, at Kingsmills Road in Wrexham, he drove a motor vehicle whilst disqualified from holding a driving licence and whilst having no insurance.

Jim Neary, prosecuting, told the court that at around 10.15pm on the day of the offence, officers on patrol spotted a grey Mercedes being driven by Georgiev - and he wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

When they stopped the dad-of-two to speak to him about it, they discovered he was in fact banned from driving.

The female passenger kept claiming she had been the driver - but the officers were certain that hadn't been the case.

Mike Pugh, defending, told the court: "He has been very candid, and accepts the facts.

"He has asked me to put forward his sincere apologies to the court.

"He accepts he was driving at the time and the reason for that is his girlfriend was heavily pregnant and became uncomfortable driving on the night in question.

"She was nine months pregnant at the time and gave birth some five days later.

"Ordinarily she would be able to drive. This of course does not excuse the fact he should not have been driving."

Georgiev received an eight-month disqualification and community order - with 70 hours of unpaid work and £85 costs to pay, as well as a £114 victim surcharge.
