Fans who took part in ugly scene of violence before Oldham Athletic's games against Wrexham on Saturday have been widely condemned after 11 men were arrested.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) announced on Sunday that the men, aged between 18 and 30, were taken into custody on suspicion of violent disorder following a mass brawl which happened before kick-off.

Footage of the fight was posted online and shows a large group of men kicking, punching and throwing objects such as bricks and wheelie bins at each other.

The Oldham Athletic Supporters Foundation (OASF) said in a statement: "On behalf of the significant majority of Oldham Athletic supporters who we are proud to represent, OASF condemn the actions of those involved on both sides.

"Unfortunately, these actions can tarnish the reputation of both Oldham Athletic and Wrexham, however we stress that those involved do not represent us or Oldham Athletic."

Wrexham has also condemned the violence.

The statement read: "We strongly condemn this hooliganism.

"The individuals involved do not represent our fanbase and are not welcome at our Football Club.

"We urge all supporters to distance themselves from such behaviour."

The statement, which was posted to the Welsh club's website, also explained they were supporting GMP in their approach and would work with the authorities where relevant.

Wrexham, who had more than 2,500 fans travel for the game, also said they were aware of violence and anti-social behaviour which took place in Failsworth before the game.

Ashton-under-Lyne and Failsworth MP, Angela Rayner, was quick to condemn the actions of those involved.

The Labour Party deputy leader took to social media on Saturday, saying: "Disgusted to see the brawl in the streets this afternoon in Failsworth before today’s match.

"This was the middle of the afternoon in a residential area where kids play.

"Thank you to GMP who were on scene to protect the public."

Following the incident, GMP Oldham said dispersal powers under anti-social behaviour within the Crime and Policing Act 2014 were granted at the scene for both sets of fans.

An estimated 60 fans from Wrexham and Oldham were issued with the direction to leave.

The men who have been arrested up to this point have been bailed pending further investigation.
